Ribonuclease P protein subunit p29 (POP4) is a nuclear protein that serves as a structural and functional constituent of both the ribonuclease P and the mitochondrial RNA processing (MRP) ribonucleoprotein complexes. Its essential biological roles include the processing of precursor RNAs, such as the 5'-end maturation of tRNA and processing of rRNA, through direct interaction with the RNA components of these complexes. POP4 contains an OB-fold, a nucleic acid-binding motif characteristic of proteins that stabilize or coordinate RNA structure within ribonucleoprotein particles. It functions in association with other protein subunits, participating in RNA-driven structural remodeling to support both substrate recognition and catalytic activity. POP4 is conserved across eukaryotes and localizes to the nucleus; its deficiency or malfunction can lead to diverse developmental and proliferative disorders due to impaired RNA maturation.
