Overview

Ribonucleotide reductase M2 polypeptide pseudogene 2 (RRM2P2) is a pseudogene in humans. Pseudogenes are nonfunctional segments of DNA that resemble functional genes and usually do not encode active proteins[6][4][8]. RRM2P2 is related in sequence to the parental RRM2 gene, which encodes a subunit of ribonucleotide reductase, a key enzyme in deoxyribonucleotide synthesis necessary for DNA replication and repair[1][3][5]. However, as a pseudogene, RRM2P2 does not produce a functional protein. Recent research suggests some pseudogenes may play regulatory roles at the RNA level, such as by producing non-coding RNAs that can modulate the expression of their parental gene through mechanisms like acting as competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs), miRNA sponges, or producing regulatory small RNAs[2]. While these functions have been described for some pseudogenes, no direct functional or disease role is currently established for RRM2P2. The canonical RRM2 gene (not the pseudogene) is highly relevant in cancer and cell proliferation contexts, but RRM2P2 itself is not considered a drug target or clinically actionable biomolecule[4][6].
