Ribonucleotide reductase subunit M1 (RRM1) is the large catalytic subunit of the enzyme ribonucleotide reductase (RNR). This enzyme plays a crucial role in DNA synthesis and cell proliferation by catalyzing the conversion of ribonucleotides to deoxyribonucleotides, which are essential precursors for DNA synthesis. RRM1 is a target for anticancer drugs, such as hydroxyurea, which inhibits ribonucleotide reductase activity. Drug-resistant cell lines may overexpress RRM1 as a mechanism of resistance.
