Ribosomal biogenesis is the complex, highly regulated process by which cells synthesize and assemble ribosomes, the molecular machines responsible for translating mRNA into proteins. This process is essential for cell growth, proliferation, and overall protein synthesis capacity. It involves transcription of rRNA genes, processing and modification of precursor rRNAs, synthesis of ribosomal proteins (RPs), import of RPs into the nucleus/nucleolus (in eukaryotes), stepwise assembly of rRNAs with RPs to form small (SSU) and large (LSU) ribosomal subunits, and export of mature subunits to the cytoplasm for final assembly into functional ribosomes. Regulation is controlled by pathways such as mTOR and c-MYC, and dysregulation can lead to diseases such as cancer or congenital disorders.
