Ribosomal Protein (RP)

Ribosomal proteins (RPs) are a diverse group of proteins that, together with ribosomal RNA (rRNA), form the structural and functional core of ribosomes—the molecular machines responsible for protein synthesis in all living cells. These proteins are essential for assembling ribosomal subunits and facilitating the translation of genetic information from messenger RNA (mRNA) into polypeptide chains. Recent research shows that some ribosomal proteins have extra-ribosomal roles including regulation of cell growth, proliferation, differentiation, participation in DNA repair and modulation of apoptosis. Altered expression or mutations in certain RP genes have been linked to various diseases, including some cancers and Diamond–Blackfan anemia.
