Ribosomal protein L10 pseudogene 1 (RPL10P1) is a non-functional genomic DNA segment sharing high sequence similarity with the ribosomal protein L10 (RPL10) gene, but lacking the capacity to encode a functional protein. RPL10P1 is classified as a processed pseudogene, derived via reverse transcription and genomic integration of a ribosomal protein L10 mRNA transcript. As is typical for ribosomal protein genes, many processed pseudogenes like RPL10P1 are scattered throughout the genome; these usually do not produce functional protein and have no known enzymatic or receptor activity. There is no evidence RPL10P1 itself acts as a functional biomolecule, receptor, enzyme, or direct therapeutic target. The functional protein, ribosomal protein L10, is a structural component of the 60S ribosomal subunit and is essential for ribosome biogenesis and function in protein synthesis. Mutations or dysregulation of the actual RPL10 gene have been associated with roles in cell proliferation, apoptosis, and some diseases, but these properties do not extend to its pseudogenes. Pseudogenes may, in rare cases, play regulatory roles at the RNA level (such as competing endogenous RNAs or involvement in regulatory networks in cancer and immunity), but there are no direct studies or established data supporting such a function for RPL10P1 specifically. Because RPL10P1 does not encode a protein and is not known to produce a functional RNA with biological activity, it is not considered a drug target, biomarker, or involved in any known adverse safety profile. In summary, RPL10P1 is a processed pseudogene of ribosomal protein L10, has no known functional protein product, is not a therapeutic target, and is not associated with disease or drug interaction profiles.
