Ribosomal protein L10 pseudogene 8 (RPL10P8) is one of many processed pseudogenes related to the ribosomal protein L10 gene family in humans. Pseudogenes like RPL10P8 are non-coding genomic DNA sequences that share high sequence similarity with their cognate protein-coding genes (in this case, RPL10), but due to mutations such as insertions, deletions, premature stop codons, or loss of regulatory elements, they do not produce a functional protein product. While functional ribosomal protein L10 is a component of the 60S ribosomal subunit and is essential for ribosome biogenesis, translation, and related cellular processes, pseudogenes such as RPL10P8 are not known to perform these roles. Although in some instances, pseudogenes may have RNA-level regulatory effects (e.g., acting as competing endogenous RNAs or microRNA sponges), there is currently no evidence in the scientific literature specifically describing a functional or regulatory role for RPL10P8 itself. Additionally, RPL10P8 is not a conventional therapeutic target as it does not encode a receptor, enzyme, transporter, channel, or functional protein. Furthermore, no specific drugs are known to interact with RPL10P8, and it is not implicated in the etiology or therapy of diseases. This target is often misunderstood; pseudogenes frequently appear in gene lists but are not protein-coding targets. There are other ribosomal protein pseudogenes (such as RPL4P4) that have been investigated for biomarker potential in certain cancers, but there is no evidence that RPL10P8 shares these properties. RPL10P8 should not be confused with the functional RPL10 gene, which has defined molecular and disease roles. Overall, RPL10P8 is not a therapeutic, diagnostic, or prognostic target, and no known disease or pharmacological relevance has been reported for it.
