Unlike its protein-coding parent gene (RPL10A), RPL10AP12 does not produce a functional protein and is not itself involved in ribosomal assembly or function[2][3][4]. Pseudogenes like RPL10AP12 are typically considered non-coding genomic DNA sequences that share high sequence similarity to their parental protein-coding genes, but lack the regulatory elements or possess disabling mutations that prevent functional protein production[4]. Some pseudogenes can have regulatory roles at the RNA level (such as acting as miRNA sponges or sources of small interfering RNAs in special contexts), but there is no published evidence that RPL10AP12 serves such a function[4][6]. RPL10AP12 is not a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor and does not have associated roles in diseases, nor are there known drugs, mechanisms of action, or biomarker applications related to this pseudogene[3][4].
