Ribosomal protein L12 pseudogene 36 (RPL12P36) is a pseudogene derived from the ribosomal protein L12 gene. Pseudogenes such as RPL12P36 are genomic DNA sequences similar to normal genes but are non-functional; they are often the result of gene duplication or retrotransposition and typically lack the ability to encode a functional protein. There are thousands of ribosomal protein pseudogenes dispersed throughout the human genome, and while they are useful in evolutionary studies and can inform probe design for research, they do not play an active role in physiology or disease and are not direct drug targets. RPL12P36 specifically refers to a processed pseudogene, not the canonical ribosomal protein L12 gene itself. Human ribosomal protein L12 gene (RPL12) does encode a functional protein that is a component of the 60S large ribosomal subunit involved in protein synthesis. The many processed pseudogenes from RPL12, such as RPL12P36, do not produce functional proteins and have no known biological or disease roles. Processed pseudogenes are considered noncoding and generally do not have regulatory, therapeutic target, or biomarker significance. Commercial and gene databases confirm that RPL12P36 exists only as a pseudogene and lacks functional annotation; it is not included in drug target or disease role databases. If you are looking for ribosomal protein L12 (not the pseudogene), that is a structural component of ribosomes and associated with protein synthesis, but the pseudogene RPL12P36 is not a valid molecular target.
