Overview

Ribosomal protein L12 pseudogene 40 is a processed pseudogene located within the human genome that originated from retrotransposition of the messenger RNA for ribosomal protein L12 (RPL12)[5]. Unlike its parental gene, RPL12P40 does not encode a functional protein and is classified as a molecular fossil of the ribosomal protein gene family. Such pseudogenes are dispersed throughout the genome and do not participate in ribosome assembly, protein synthesis, or any cellular functions. Pseudogenes like RPL12P40 may decay over evolutionary time or acquire silent mutations and are not considered therapeutic targets, nor do they have known pathogenic, biomarker, or pharmacological roles[5].
