Ribosomal protein L12 pseudogene 5 (RPL12P5) is a processed pseudogene related to the ribosomal protein L12 gene family found in the human genome. Pseudogenes are segments of DNA that resemble protein-coding genes but are typically nonfunctional as they do not produce functional proteins. RPL12P5 is one of many pseudogenes corresponding to the ribosomal protein L12 gene (RPL12), which itself codes for a structural component of the ribosome involved in protein synthesis. However, RPL12P5 specifically does not encode a protein, has no known biological function, is not implicated as a disease gene or drug target, and has no utility as a biomarker. The function and potential roles of ribosomal protein pseudogenes (RPPs) in general are not well understood, and they are not considered druggable or targetable molecules in drug discovery or clinical contexts. Pseudogenes like RPL12P5 are widespread in the human genome and arise from duplication or retrotransposition of functional genes, but accumulate mutations that prevent them from being functional. There is no evidence that RPL12P5 is involved in disease, drug response, or any cellular process; its significance is primarily as a genomic locus with sequence similarity to the RPL12 gene. No drug, biomarker, or mechanism of action is associated with this pseudogene. Scientific literature emphasizes a lack of known function or impact for ribosomal protein pseudogenes, including RPL12P5. Therefore, RPL12P5 should not be treated as a therapeutic target or biomarker. Any association with protein synthesis or ribosome biogenesis belongs to its parent gene RPL12, not the pseudogene.
