A ribosomal protein L13 pseudogene (RPL13P) is a non-functional genomic DNA sequence that closely resembles the ribosomal protein L13 gene (RPL13), but due to mutations such as frameshifts or stop codons, it does not encode a functional protein[2][5][6]. Pseudogenes like RPL13P arise via mechanisms such as retrotransposition (processed pseudogenes) or gene duplication followed by inactivation[6]. Numerous processed pseudogenes for ribosomal proteins are scattered throughout the human genome, but they do not contribute to ribosome biogenesis or function[2][6]. RPL13P is not recognized as a therapeutic target, receptor, or enzyme, and is not suitable for drug development. Some aliases (e.g., BBC1p) are associated with yeast biology and cytoskeletal regulation but are not human ribosomal protein L13 pseudogenes[1]. Therefore, RPL13P and similar pseudogenes are best classified as genomic relics rather than true molecular targets.
