Overview

Ribosomal protein L13 pseudogene 4 (RPL13P4) is a processed pseudogene related to the functional ribosomal protein L13 gene (RPL13)[1][6]. Pseudogenes such as RPL13P4 usually arise from duplication or retrotransposition of functional genes but accumulate mutations that prevent them from encoding a functional protein. As such, RPL13P4 does not produce a functional ribosomal protein and does not play a direct role in cellular biology or disease, nor is it a candidate for therapeutic targeting[1][6]. It has no documented involvement with drugs, biomarkers, or known safety concerns. RPL13P4 should not be confused with the functional RPL13 gene (Ribosomal protein L13), which is an essential component of the large ribosomal 60S subunit, involved in protein synthesis and various human diseases[3][4][5]. RPL13P4 shares sequence similarity with RPL13 but is functionally inert[1][6].
