Ribosomal protein L13a pseudogene 16 (RPL13AP16)

Target
RPL13AP16
Molecular classification
Other, Pseudogene
01

Overview

RPL13AP16 is a processed pseudogene related to the *RPL13A* gene, which encodes ribosomal protein L13a, a structural component of the 60S ribosomal subunit. Unlike the functional *RPL13A* gene, RPL13AP16 does not encode a functional protein and has no known biological function. Pseudogenes are typically non-functional genomic DNA sequences similar to known genes, likely originating from gene duplication or retrotransposition events. Therefore, RPL13AP16 is not considered a therapeutic target, does not play a role in disease, has no interacting drugs, and is not useful as a biomarker. The functional ribosomal protein L13a (*RPL13A*) participates in mRNA translation and specific inflammatory responses but is not encoded by RPL13AP16. Pseudogenes such as RPL13AP16 are common for ribosomal proteins and serve mostly as genomic relics rather than active receptors, enzymes, or therapeutic targets. There is no evidence for any disease association, molecular interactions, or safety concerns related to RPL13AP16. RPL13AP16 should not be considered a target for drug development or therapeutic intervention. If your goal is to obtain information about the functional ribosomal protein, refer to *RPL13A* ("Ribosomal protein L13a"), not *RPL13AP16*.
