It is one of many processed pseudogenes dispersed throughout the human genome that originate from the protein-coding gene RPL13A, which encodes a structural component of the ribosomal 60S subunit[3][5]. Unlike the functional gene, RPL13AP24 is not known to produce protein or possess a therapeutic or physiological role. Pseudogenes can complicate genetic studies due to their sequence similarity with functional genes[10], but there is no evidence that RPL13AP24 itself is implicated in disease, functions as a biomarker, or is a target of any known drugs.
