RPL13AP8, ribosomal protein L13a pseudogene 8, is a human processed pseudogene derived from the parental gene RPL13A, which encodes a protein component of the ribosomal 60S subunit. This pseudogene is found at locus chr4:71678571-71678788 and does not transcribe a functional protein product; instead, processed pseudogenes like RPL13AP8 are generally remnants of reverse-transcribed mRNA that have integrated into the genome. While some pseudogenes possess regulatory or non-coding RNA functions, there is no evidence that RPL13AP8 plays a direct biological or pathogenic role. It is not considered a druggable or therapeutic target. RPL13AP8 should be distinguished from the protein-coding gene RPL13A (ribosomal protein L13a), which is necessary for ribosome structure and has additional regulatory functions in inflammation, but the pseudogene itself lacks these activities.
