Overview

Ribosomal protein L15 pseudogene 16 (RPL15P16) is a processed pseudogene and not a functional protein-coding gene. Pseudogenes are genomic DNA sequences similar to normal genes but non-functional; they are typically the result of gene duplication or retrotransposition events and have accumulated mutations that preclude normal protein production. RPL15P16 is related by sequence homology to the functional ribosomal protein L15 gene (RPL15), which encodes a critical structural protein of the large 60S ribosomal subunit involved in translation. However, RPL15P16 itself does not encode a functional protein, has no known biological function, is not associated with disease, and is not a therapeutic target.
