Ribosomal protein L17 pseudogene 12 (RPL17P12) is a processed pseudogene derived from the ribosomal protein L17 gene. Unlike its parent gene RPL17, which encodes a structural component of the large 60S ribosomal subunit, RPL17P12 does not encode a functional protein. Ribosomal protein pseudogenes like RPL17P12 are common in the human genome and are considered molecular fossils, typically non-coding and not involved in any known cellular or disease-related biological functions[2][3][4]. Pseudogenes can arise by retrotransposition or genomic duplication but are generally inactive due to mutations or truncations. RPL17P12 should not be considered a therapeutic target.
