Ribosomal protein L17 pseudogene 14 (RPL17P14) is one of the many processed pseudogenes generated from the functional ribosomal protein L17 (RPL17) gene and is located in the human genome[6][11]. Pseudogenes like RPL17P14 typically do not encode functional proteins and lack biological activity as enzymes, transporters, receptors, or other canonical drug targets[8][9]. They are related by sequence to true ribosomal protein genes but usually result from gene duplication or retrotransposition events and accumulate mutations rendering them inactive[9]. Ribosomal protein L17 pseudogenes, including RPL17P14, are not characterized as therapeutic targets or associated with disease mechanisms, and no approved drugs or clinical safety concerns relate to them. In functional studies, research instead focuses on the parent gene, RPL17, which encodes a protein component of the large 60S ribosomal subunit involved in protein synthesis[1][6][13].
