Overview

Ribosomal protein L17 pseudogene 21 (RPL17P21) is a processed pseudogene derived from the functional ribosomal protein L17 (RPL17) gene. Pseudogenes like RPL17P21 are non-coding DNA segments with high sequence similarity to their parent gene but lack protein-coding potential because of disruptive mutations or lack of regulatory elements. They do not produce functional protein products and, therefore, are not considered therapeutic targets, nor are they directly associated with known biological functions, disease roles, or drug interactions. RPL17P21 shares sequence homology with RPL17 but does not encode a functional ribosomal protein. Processed pseudogenes like RPL17P21 originate from duplication events and lack a protein-coding role. RPL17P21 has no assigned function, no disease association, and is not a target for drug development. The parent gene RPL17 encodes a component of the 60S ribosomal subunit and is involved in protein synthesis, but pseudogenes like RPL17P21 do not share these functions. RPL17P21 is not a bona fide drug target; it is a pseudogene with sequence similarity to the ribosomal protein L17 gene but does not produce a functional product or play a functional role in cellular biology.
