Ribosomal protein L17 pseudogene 44 (RPL17P44) is classified as a pseudogene, meaning it is a DNA sequence derived from the ribosomal protein L17 (RPL17) gene but is not believed to encode a functional protein[4][6][8]. Pseudogenes like RPL17P44 typically arise through retrotransposition or duplication events but acquire mutations that prevent translation into functional proteins[2][9]. The human genome contains hundreds of ribosomal protein pseudogenes, including many for RPL17, and their presence is considered a consequence of genome evolution[2][9]. Although some pseudogenes can be transcribed, there is no evidence that RPL17P44 produces a functional product, nor is it associated with biological functions, disease roles, or drug interactions[6][7]. Thus, RPL17P44 is not considered a relevant molecular target in therapeutic contexts.
