Ribosomal protein L17 pseudogene 5 (RPL17P5) is a genomic DNA sequence classified as a processed pseudogene sharing homology with the protein-coding gene for ribosomal protein L17 (RPL17). Pseudogenes like RPL17P5 are nonfunctional relatives of functional genes, typically arising from gene duplication or retrotransposition events, but they do not encode a functional protein product and usually have no established biological or therapeutic relevance. Multiple RPL17-related pseudogenes are dispersed in the genome, and there is no evidence for translation, disease association, or active role in cell physiology. The canonical, functional gene is ribosomal protein L17 (RPL17), which encodes a component of the 60S ribosomal subunit; however, RPL17P5 does not produce a ribosomal protein. RPL17P5 is a pseudogene, not the functional ribosomal protein L17 or any other canonical drug target. Pseudogenes are generally not used as therapeutic targets nor considered biologically functional unless otherwise demonstrated experimentally.
