Target intelligence / Profile preview
RPL18P1 (ribosomal protein L18 pseudogene 1) is a non-coding processed pseudogene related to the functional ribosomal protein L18 gene. Pseudogenes like RPL18P1 are remnants of gene duplication or retrotransposition events and typically lack the capacity to produce any functional protein. While the functional RPL18 protein forms part of the 60S large ribosomal subunit and is essential for ribosome activity and protein synthesis, RPL18P1 is a genomic sequence that no longer encodes a protein and is not known to have biological activity. There is no evidence that RPL18P1 serves as a drug target, has clinical significance, or encodes a product involved in disease. Pseudogenes are commonly found for ribosomal proteins due to their high expression and retrotransposition rates. Unlike the functional RPL18 gene, which is associated with protein synthesis and certain diseases such as Diamond-Blackfan anemia, RPL18P1 is non-functional. RPL18P1 should not be confused with RPL18 (ribosomal protein L18), which is a functional and essential protein. Some ribosomal protein pseudogenes have been speculated to play roles as noncoding RNAs in regulatory pathways, especially in immunity or cancer, but there is no direct evidence or mechanistic implication for RPL18P1 specifically.
None (not druggable; no known mechanism of action)
