Overview

Ribosomal protein L18 pseudogene 11 (RPL18P11) is a processed pseudogene derived from the ribosomal protein L18 gene. Like other pseudogenes, it contains sequence similarity to the parental gene but is disrupted by mutations or truncations that prevent production of a functional protein[7][13]. Processed pseudogenes arise from reverse transcription of mRNA and subsequent integration into the genome, lacking the intron-exon structure of the original gene[5][13]. While functional ribosomal protein L18 is a structural component of the 60S ribosomal subunit and plays a role in protein synthesis, pseudogenes such as RPL18P11 are mostly non-coding; some may participate in gene regulation or RNA-mediated processes, but specific functional evidence for RPL18P11 is lacking[7][8][13]. As a pseudogene, it is not considered a therapeutic drug target, and there is no evidence linking it to disease or drug responsiveness. RPL18P11 is not a protein-coding gene nor a therapeutic target[7][13]. It does not encode a functional protein or have a direct role in disease or drug response. Functional ribosomal protein L18 (RPL18) is distinct and is not interchangeable with the pseudogene[1][3][7]. Pseudogenes like RPL18P11 are often present in the genome as remnants of historic gene duplications and retrotransposition events[5][13].
