Overview

Ribosomal protein L18a pseudogene 17 (RPL18AP17) is a processed pseudogene in the human genome located on chromosome 13q21.33[4][6]. It derives its name from sequence similarity to the functional ribosomal protein L18a gene (RPL18A), which encodes a component of the 60S ribosomal subunit—a protein involved in cytoplasmic ribosomal structure and function[5][7][9]. However, as a pseudogene, RPL18AP17 does not produce a functional protein nor participate in ribosomal assembly, protein synthesis, or known biological processes[1][2][4][6][8]. There are many such pseudogenes in the human genome, originating as remnants from gene duplication or retrotransposition events but lacking the capacity for normal expression or function. RPL18AP17 has no known implications in human disease, drug targeting, or biomarker utility. If you require information on the functional ribosomal protein L18a (RPL18A), this is a distinct, protein-coding gene with documented biological functions in the ribosome, implications in viral biology, and minimal disease associations[5][7][9]. RPL18AP17 itself is not a legitimate therapeutic target or biomarker.
