Overview

Ribosomal protein L18a pseudogene 9 (RPL18AP9) is a processed pseudogene derived from the ribosomal protein L18a gene. Unlike its parent gene, RPL18A, which encodes a component of the 60S ribosomal subunit and is essential for protein synthesis, RPL18AP9 is noncoding and does not produce a functional polypeptide. As with many ribosomal protein pseudogenes, it originated from reverse-transcribed mRNA integrated into the genome. While some pseudogenes regulate their parental gene or act in microRNA pathways, there is no evidence that RPL18AP9 has any direct biological or pathological role, nor is it a therapeutic target.
