Overview

Ribosomal protein L21 pseudogene 103 (RPL21P103), also known as RPL21_44_1241 and RPL21P103, is a human processed pseudogene closely related to the functional ribosomal protein L21 gene (RPL21). It is not a protein-coding gene and does not produce a functional protein. RPL21P103 is a processed pseudogene, meaning it originated via retrotransposition from its parent gene (RPL21), followed by accumulation of disabling mutations that prevent it from encoding a protein. The parent, RPL21, encodes a component of the 60S ribosomal subunit involved in protein synthesis. Like many ribosomal protein genes, RPL21 has multiple pseudogenes dispersed throughout the genome; RPL21 alone is associated with at least 143 pseudogenes in humans. Pseudogenes such as RPL21P103 do not have known biological functions, are not therapeutic targets, and are not relevant to drug development, mechanism of action, or safety concerns.
