Multiple processed pseudogenes of ribosomal proteins, including RPL21, exist dispersed throughout the human genome as a result of gene duplication and processing events[2][3][5]. RPL21P106 should not be confused with the functional ribosomal protein L21 (RPL21), which is an essential part of the human ribosome and has been linked to specific genetic disorders[2][3].
