RPL21P126 is classified as a pseudogene of the ribosomal protein L21 gene family, specifically the 126th such pseudogene in the human genome. Pseudogenes are DNA sequences similar to functional genes but are noncoding due to accumulated mutations and typically do not produce functional proteins. The functional version, ribosomal protein L21 (RPL21), is an essential component of the 60S ribosomal subunit involved in protein synthesis, but RPL21P126 itself does not encode a functional protein. There are numerous RPL21 pseudogenes dispersed throughout the human genome as a result of retrotransposition and gene duplication events. These pseudogenes are not involved in known biological processes, do not interact with drugs, and have no established role in disease or therapeutic targeting. Pseudogenes like RPL21P126 may occasionally be transcribed but do not lead to functional protein products. The true gene, RPL21, mutations in which cause hypotrichosis simplex of the scalp, is unrelated to the pseudogene’s function. There is no evidence that RPL21P126 acts as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or has any activity relevant to pharmacology or patient stratification. The existence of many processed pseudogenes for ribosomal proteins is a common feature in mammalian genomes. This entry is not a canonical therapeutic target and refers to a non-functional pseudogene, not a protein or receptor. While RPL21 is a legitimate ribosomal protein, RPL21P126 does not encode an active molecule or participate in drug interactions or disease mechanisms. The entry is thus flagged as incorrect in the context of therapeutic targeting.
