Pseudogenes are inactive genetic elements that resemble functional genes but are usually not transcribed or translated into peptides. The functional gene, RPL21, encodes a structural component of the large 60S ribosomal subunit responsible for catalyzing protein synthesis in the cytoplasm; however, processed pseudogenes like RPL21P136 arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events and lack biological activity[1][3][5]. There is no evidence of involvement in disease or interaction with drugs relating to RPL21P136. The existence of this pseudogene simply reflects genomic duplication events common to ribosomal protein genes.
