RPL21P20 (ribosomal protein L21 pseudogene 20) is a processed pseudogene in the human genome, related to the functional ribosomal protein L21 gene. Pseudogenes are nonfunctional genomic sequences similar to known genes but typically do not produce functional proteins due to disabling mutations or lack of regulatory elements. RPL21P20 has no known roles in biological processes or disease, and is not a protein-coding gene nor a therapeutic target[1][4][8]. The canonical, functional counterpart, ribosomal protein L21 (RPL21), is a component of the 60S ribosomal subunit and is critical for protein synthesis. However, RPL21P20 does not encode a functional protein and is not implicated in clinical or pharmacological applications[1][5].
