Target intelligence / Profile preview
Ribosomal protein L21 pseudogene 23 is a processed pseudogene derived from the ribosomal protein L21 (RPL21) gene, located in the human genome. It does not code for a functional protein and is considered non-coding, carrying disabling mutations that prevent translation. While the functional RPL21 protein forms part of the large 60S ribosomal subunit involved in protein synthesis, the pseudogene itself has no established molecular function or clinical significance. RPL21P23 (NCBI Gene: 100270879, Ensembl: ENSG00000236776) is annotated as a pseudogene and is not listed as encoding a protein or possessing regulatory function. Pseudogenes of ribosomal proteins are numerous in the human genome, often arising through retrotransposition and are not generally transcribed into functional proteins. No structured clinical, pharmacological, or molecular research exists linking RPL21P23 to diseases, drug responses, or biomarkers; it is not included in therapeutic target databases or disease association studies. Functional ribosomal protein L21 (RPL21) is a bona fide ribosomal protein of the 60S subunit, with clinical implications for mutations (e.g., Hypotrichosis simplex of the scalp), but there is no such evidence for any of its pseudogenes, including RPL21P23.
