Overview

Ribosomal protein L21 pseudogene 27 (RPL21P27) is a processed pseudogene of the RPL21 gene. RPL21 encodes a protein that is part of the 60S large ribosomal subunit and is involved in protein synthesis[4][7]. However, RPL21P27, as a pseudogene, does not encode a functional protein and is not considered a therapeutic target. Multiple processed pseudogenes of ribosomal proteins, including RPL21, are dispersed throughout the human genome as remnants of evolution and do not typically have known roles in disease, drug interaction, or clinical use[7][8]. The entry is not a true molecular target and thus is not relevant in the context of drug discovery or therapeutic intervention. RPL21 is associated with ribosome structure and function; mutations in the functional RPL21 gene (not pseudogenes) can lead to clinical phenotypes such as Hypotrichosis simplex of the scalp[4][7]. Pseudogenes can sometimes regulate gene expression, but there is no evidence that RPL21P27 has established functional significance in disease or as a therapeutic target[2][8].
