Ribosomal protein L21 pseudogene 31 (RPL21P31)

Target
RPL21P31
Molecular classification
Other (Pseudogene)
01

Overview

Ribosomal protein L21 pseudogene 31 (RPL21P31) is a non-protein-coding pseudogene related to the ribosomal protein L21 gene. Pseudogenes are genomic DNA sequences similar to known genes but are nonfunctional typically due to mutations or lack of regulatory elements required for expression. RPL21P31 does not encode a functional protein and is not known to participate directly in cellular processes or disease mechanisms. The presence of multiple RPL21 pseudogenes throughout the genome is a common feature of ribosomal protein genes, whose functional counterparts are essential components of the ribosome's large (60S) subunit involved in protein synthesis.

Mechanism of action

None. There are no mechanisms of action for drugs targeting this pseudogene

03

Biological functions

Other (No protein product; typical pseudogenes do not have established biological functions apart from possible roles in gene regulation or genomic structure)
04

Disease associations

Other (No direct association with disease. Note: Mutations in the *functional* RPL21 gene, not the pseudogene, can cause Hypotrichosis simplex of the scalp)
