Overview

Ribosomal protein L21 pseudogene 38 (RPL21P38) is a human processed pseudogene related to the ribosomal protein L21 gene. Pseudogenes like RPL21P38, by definition, are DNA sequences similar to normal genes but are non-functional; they arise from the duplication or retrotransposition of functional genes but have lost their ability to encode a protein due to mutations, truncations, or absence of regulatory elements. RPL21P38 has no known function, is not expressed as a protein, and has not been associated with disease or drug targeting. The functional version of this gene family, ribosomal protein L21 (RPL21), is a component of the large 60S subunit of the ribosome and is involved in protein synthesis, but RPL21P38 itself serves no known cellular or therapeutic role.
