Overview

Ribosomal protein L21 pseudogene 43 (RPL21P43) is one of many processed pseudogenes related to the ribosomal protein L21 (RPL21) gene. Pseudogenes are copies of protein-coding genes that have lost their ability to encode functional proteins due to accumulated mutations or the lack of regulatory elements required for expression[4][6]. While RPL21 is a bona fide structural component of the 60S ribosomal large subunit and essential for protein synthesis[1][3][5], its pseudogenes—including RPL21P43—are not translated into functional proteins. Recent research suggests that some ribosomal protein pseudogenes can modulate the expression of their parent genes through regulatory RNAs or act as miRNA sponges, thereby affecting canonical ribosomal functions, but direct evidence for such a role for RPL21P43 specifically is lacking[4]. Pseudogenes do not qualify as therapeutic targets, and no drugs, biomarkers, or safety concerns are associated with RPL21P43. RPL21P43 is a non-coding pseudogene, not a therapeutic or functional molecular target. It serves as a genomic remnant and, while it may exert regulatory effects at the RNA level, lacks direct biological function and is not associated with druggability, disease causality, or biomarker status[4][6].
