RPL21P49 is a pseudogene, specifically ribosomal protein L21 pseudogene 49. It is a DNA sequence that shares high similarity with the functional ribosomal protein L21 (RPL21) gene but has accumulated mutations that prevent it from being translated into a functional protein. As a result, RPL21P49 is generally considered non-functional in terms of protein production. While some pseudogenes have been found to exert non-coding regulatory functions, such as influencing the expression of their parent genes or acting as miRNA sponges, specific and well-defined biological roles for RPL21P49 are not broadly established. Due to its nature as a non-coding pseudogene, it is not typically considered a direct therapeutic target for drug development.
