Ribosomal protein L21 pseudogene 57 (RPL21P57) is a processed pseudogene in the human genome that is related, by sequence homology, to the RPL21 gene, which encodes a structural component of the ribosomal 60S subunit. Like most ribosomal protein pseudogenes, RPL21P57 does not encode a functional protein and has no known biological function, involvement in disease, or relevance as a drug target. Pseudogenes like RPL21P57 are abundant in the genome due to retrotransposition events related to highly expressed house-keeping genes, such as ribosomal proteins. Unless specifically implicated by new research, RPL21P57 is not considered a therapeutic target and does not participate in biological pathways or disease mechanisms.
