Ribosomal protein L21 pseudogene 6 (RPL21P6) is a processed pseudogene, meaning it is a copy of the ribosomal protein L21 gene that has accumulated mutations rendering it non-functional for protein coding[4][8][5]. RPL21P6 is one of over a hundred pseudogenes derived from the parent RPL21 ribosomal protein gene in the human genome[5][6]. While most pseudogenes, including RPL21P6, do not produce functional proteins, some can have regulatory roles at the transcript level, such as acting as RNA molecules that modulate expression of the parent ribosomal protein gene through mechanisms like RNA interference or by serving as "sponges" for microRNAs[2]. There is no evidence that RPL21P6 encodes an active receptor, enzyme, or any other druggable protein, nor is it directly associated with disease pathology or used as a drug target or biomarker[4][8][11]. The parent gene, *RPL21* (60S ribosomal protein L21), encodes a component of the large ribosomal 60S subunit in the cytoplasm, but RPL21P6 itself is a non-coding pseudogene[7][10][8].
