Pseudogenes like RPL21P61 may be transcribed in some instances, but generally do not code for a functional protein and do not act as receptors, enzymes, or drug targets[3][4][5][7]. The functional RPL21 gene encodes a structural component of the 60S subunit of the ribosome, involved in protein synthesis and certain genetic diseases such as hypotrichosis simplex[5][3][1]. However, RPL21P61 itself does not have a known biological role, therapeutic relevance, or disease association.
