Overview

RPL21P64 (ribosomal protein L21 pseudogene 64) is one of many processed pseudogenes derived from the ribosomal protein L21 gene. Ribosomal pseudogenes are non-functional, mutated copies of ribosomal protein coding genes scattered throughout the genome, often as the result of retrotransposition events. RPL21P64 does not encode a protein and does not participate directly in ribosome structure or function. Recent research indicates that some ribosomal protein pseudogenes can affect parent gene regulation at the RNA level, including through mechanisms such as RNA interference or microRNA sponging, thereby modulating biological processes indirectly. However, RPL21P64 has no established role as a therapeutic target, clinical biomarker, or direct disease association, and is not targeted by any drugs. The functional ribosomal protein L21, encoded by RPL21, is involved in ribosome assembly and protein synthesis, and disease associations relate only to the parent gene, not the pseudogene. In summary, RPL21P64 is correctly classified as a pseudogene with minor regulatory implications and is not a valid target for drug discovery or therapeutic intervention.
