Ribosomal protein L21 pseudogene 68 (RPL21P68)

Overview

RPL21P68 is a processed pseudogene that is related by sequence to the functional ribosomal protein L21 gene (RPL21). It does not encode a functional protein and there is no evidence that it has an active biological role or is involved in any known cellular process or disease as a target. Genes encoding ribosomal proteins—including RPL21—have many pseudogene copies dispersed throughout the human genome, and RPL21P68 is one such copy. Pseudogenes are generally considered non-functional remnants of gene duplication or retrotransposition events.\nThere is no evidence that RPL21P68 acts as a therapeutic target (such as receptor, enzyme, transporter, etc.), nor are there known drugs, mechanisms of action, disease associations, or safety concerns related to this pseudogene. The functional RPL21 gene (not the pseudogene) encodes a ribosomal protein involved in ribosome assembly and has a clinical link to hypotrichosis simplex of the scalp in humans, but this is not true for RPL21P68.
