Ribosomal protein L21 pseudogene 74 (RPL21P74) is one of the many processed pseudogenes in the human genome derived from the gene encoding ribosomal protein L21. Pseudogenes like RPL21P74 do not produce functional proteins and are generally regarded as evolutionary relics of former gene duplications or retrotransposition events[3][8]. They do not have an established biological function or disease association, nor are they recognized as potential drug targets in pharmacology. Functional ribosomal protein L21 is a component of the 60S ribosomal subunit and participates in cellular protein synthesis, but the pseudogene itself is nonfunctional[5][7][3].
