Ribosomal protein L22 pseudogene 20 (RPL22P20) is a processed pseudogene related to the ribosomal protein L22 gene (RPL22). Pseudogenes such as RPL22P20 are non-functional copies of protein-coding genes that arise during genomic evolution and typically do not encode functional proteins. While the parent gene RPL22 is a component of the large ribosomal 60S subunit and is involved in protein synthesis and implicated in several cancers and biological processes, there is no evidence that RPL22P20 itself is functional, serves as a therapeutic target, or is involved in disease. Pseudogenes may in rare cases have regulatory RNA roles, but no such activities have been described for RPL22P20 in the available literature.
