Overview

Ribosomal protein L22 pseudogene 21 (RPL22P21) is a processed pseudogene in the human genome related to the functional ribosomal protein L22 gene (RPL22), which encodes a component of the large 60S ribosomal subunit. Pseudogenes such as RPL22P21 do not encode a functional protein and are generally considered genomic "fossils" arising from retrotransposition or duplication of their parent gene, in this case RPL22. There are numerous ribosomal protein pseudogenes scattered throughout the genome due to the high expression and evolutionary conservation of ribosomal protein genes. RPL22P21 is not a recognized therapeutic target, has no known direct biological function or disease association, and does not interact with drugs or serve as a biomarker. Misidentification or confusion with functional homologues occasionally occurs, but current evidence supports only a genomic annotation role for RPL22P21[2][4][6].
