Overview

Ribosomal protein L23 pseudogene 2 (RPL23P2) is a processed pseudogene of the functional ribosomal protein gene RPL23, which encodes a component of the 60S ribosomal subunit[1][4][5][8]. Pseudogenes like RPL23P2 arise from reverse transcription and genomic insertion of mRNA from functional ribosomal protein genes, but they typically do not produce functional proteins due to disabling mutations, truncations, or other sequence disruptions[4]. The RPL23P2 gene does not encode a protein or have known direct biological activity and is not considered a drug target or therapeutic receptor/enzyme/transporter. Some studies have explored the expression of ribosomal protein pseudogenes in cancer, including the association of similar pseudogenes (e.g., RPL23AP53) with melanoma prognosis and immune cell infiltration, but no direct therapeutic or biomarker role is established for RPL23P2 itself[2].
