It is a non-functional copy of the ribosomal protein L23a gene (RPL23A) and does not encode an active protein. Pseudogenes like RPL23AP22 arise through gene duplication or retrotransposition events and typically lack regulatory elements or coding potential required for protein synthesis. The canonical parent protein, ribosomal protein L23a, is a structural component of the 60S large ribosomal subunit, but RPL23AP22 itself is not expressed as a protein and is not considered to have a direct role in cellular processes or disease as an active gene product.
