Overview

RPL23AP34 (Ribosomal protein L23a pseudogene 34) is a non-coding processed pseudogene in the human genome, sharing sequence similarity with the functional ribosomal protein L23a gene (RPL23A)[4][1][6]. As a pseudogene, RPL23AP34 does not encode a functional protein and is generally considered transcriptionally silent or non-functional. While functions have been described for some ribosomal protein L23a pseudogenes in gene regulation or cancer biology, there is currently no published evidence linking RPL23AP34 itself to any specific biological process, disease, or drug response[5]. Its aliases include RPL23A_8_204 and RPL23AP34. Ribosomal protein L23a (the functional gene) is a component of the 60S subunit of the eukaryotic ribosome and is fundamentally important for protein synthesis, but RPL23AP34 is a non-functional genomic copy and does not contribute to ribosomal assembly or function[3][4][7]. Pseudogenes are widespread in the genome and can have regulatory roles in some cases, but for RPL23AP34 such roles have not been reported. Other ribosomal protein L23a pseudogenes, such as RPL23AP53, have been studied for their role as biomarkers in malignancy or gene expression regulation[5], but these findings do not apply to RPL23AP34[4][5]. No evidence indicates that RPL23AP34 encodes a protein, acts as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or other canonical therapeutic target. It is therefore not considered a therapeutic target or clinically relevant biomarker at this time.
