Ribosomal protein L23a pseudogene 38 (RPL23AP38)

Target
RPL23AP38
Molecular classification
Other (Pseudogene), Non-coding RNA (Pseudogene of a ribosomal protein gene)
01

Overview

Ribosomal protein L23a pseudogene 38 (RPL23AP38) is a processed pseudogene related to the protein-coding RPL23A gene, which codes for a structural component of the 60S subunit of the ribosome. Like other ribosomal protein pseudogenes, RPL23AP38 is not known to encode a functional protein, nor is there evidence that it is transcribed or has a significant regulatory role. It is not considered a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or therapeutic molecular target. While some ribosomal protein pseudogenes (such as RPL23AP53) have demonstrated altered expression and biomarker potential in certain cancers, there is currently no information to support such a role for RPL23AP38 specifically.

03

Biological functions

No direct biological function as it is a pseudogene(For the parent gene, RPL23A: component of the ribosome, rRNA binding, structural constituent of ribosome)
04

Disease associations

No established disease roles for this pseudogene specifically(Other ribosomal protein L23a pseudogenes, e.g. RPL23AP53, have been investigated for expression differences in cancer, such as melanoma, suggesting potential roles as biomarkers)

Biomarkers

Pseudogenes from this family (analogous examples: RPL23AP53) have shown potential association with diagnosis and prognosis in cancers, e.g., *melanoma*, but not specifically for RPL23AP38
