Overview

Ribosomal protein L23a pseudogene 39 (RPL23AP39) is a processed pseudogene of the ribosomal protein L23a gene. It is found in the human genome but does not encode a functional protein. RPL23AP39 is not considered a protein-coding gene or a traditional therapeutic target. Unlike the parental RPL23A gene, which encodes a component of the 60S ribosomal subunit involved in protein synthesis, RPL23AP39 is a non-functional pseudogene resulting from duplication and loss of coding potential. There is currently no evidence indicating biological function, disease association, or therapeutic interaction for RPL23AP39[2][4][6]. The true ribosomal protein L23a (RPL23A) is essential for ribosome structure and function but RPL23AP39 is a pseudogene and not a direct protein product[1][7]. Processed pseudogenes like RPL23AP39 may rarely have regulatory roles, but no such role is documented for this locus[2].
